Sliding Sands (Keoneheʻeheʻe) Trail, Haleakalā

HikesMauiChecked Oct. 29, 2026

The trail into Haleakalā crater, starting at the summit visitor center parking lot at about 10,000 feet. It drops almost 2,500 feet across cinder slopes to the crater floor. Going down is easy; climbing back up at altitude takes about twice as long.

  • Trailhead: Haleakalā Visitor Center parking lot (summit district). Restrooms and water are only at the visitor center.
  • Options: a short walk to the first overlook (0.5 mile round trip); 3.9 miles one way to the crater floor; about 5.6 miles to Kapalaoa Cabin; or about 11 miles through to the Halemauʻu trailhead (arrange a car shuttle).
  • Almost 2,500 feet of descent, all of which you climb back out. The park advises allowing twice as long to come up as to go down.
  • It's often cold, windy and very sunny at 10,000 feet. Bring layers, plenty of water, sun protection and food.
  • Park entrance fee required. A separate sunrise reservation is needed only to enter the summit district between 3 and 7 a.m.
  • Stay on the trail; the crater's plants (including the ʻāhinahina, silversword) are fragile and protected.
