Hoapili Trail (King's Highway), La Perouse Bay

HikesMauiChecked Oct. 29, 2026

An ancient Hawaiian coastal path, rebuilt in 1824, across the jagged lava fields of South Maui's last lava flow. Most people go out and back from La Perouse Bay to Kanaio Beach: about 5.5 miles and 4 hours with no shade. Start early and bring lots of water.

  • Start: the La Perouse Bay parking area, where Mākena Road dead-ends about 3 miles past Big Beach (Mākena).
  • Length: about 5.5 miles round trip to Kanaio Beach, about 4 hours. Even an hour gives a good feel for it.
  • Terrain: sharp ʻaʻā lava. Wear sturdy shoes, not slippers.
  • No shade, water or reliable cell service. Go early in the morning to beat the heat.
  • The surf spot 'Laps' early on gets dangerous during big south swells. The trail passes historic sites; look, don't touch or move stones.
  • Nearby: the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu reserve and La Perouse Bay, where spinner dolphins often rest; keep your distance.
