HikesOʻahuChecked Oct. 30, 2026

Oʻahu's famous stair workout: 1,048 old railway ties straight up Koko Crater, about 1,200 feet of climbing in roughly 1.6 miles round trip. Strenuous, with no shade. Free parking at Koko Head District Park in Hawaiʻi Kai.

  • Difficulty: strenuous, nearly vertical with no switchbacks.
  • 1,048 steps (ties from a World War II military tramway); summit at about 1,208 feet.
  • Time: 45 to 60 minutes round trip for first-timers.
  • Halfway up, a narrow section crosses a gap like a bridge; a bypass path on the right rejoins the trail.
  • No shade at all; go early or late and carry water.
  • Parking: free lot at Koko Head District Park, 423 Portlock Road (lot open 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.).
  • Free.
