Papakōlea Green Sand Beach hike

HikesHawaiʻi IslandChecked Oct. 29, 2026

A rare olivine green-sand beach near Ka Lae (South Point). The walk is about 4.5 miles round trip from the end of South Point Road, 3 to 4 hours with no shade or water and strong wind. Informal $20 cash truck rides operate without commercial permits, according to DHHL, and rental-car contracts ban driving the jeep road.

  • Length: about 4.5 miles round trip over a rutted dirt road; allow 3 to 4 hours.
  • No shade, no water, no restrooms at the beach, and the wind is often strong. Bring plenty of water, a hat and sturdy shoes.
  • The land belongs to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), and residents live there; be respectful.
  • Truck rides: drivers ask about $20 cash per person, but DHHL says they hold no commercial permits. Rental-car contracts prohibit driving your own car down the jeep road.
  • No lifeguards. The cove gets strong surf and currents, so many people just look and don't swim. The final climb down to the sand is steep.
  • Cell service is spotty. Don't take any sand; it's part of the place.
