Warning sirens and the monthly test

SafetyStatewideChecked Oct. 29, 2026

Hawaiʻi tests its outdoor warning sirens on the first working day of each month at 11:45 a.m. with a one-minute steady tone. If sirens sound at any other time, treat it as real and turn on local radio, TV or check your phone for alerts.

  • Test: first working day of the month, 11:45 a.m. HST, about one minute, steady tone. No drill goes with it.
  • Any other time: a siren means an emergency such as a tsunami or other hazard. Get official instructions right away.
  • Where to get instructions: local radio and TV, and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone.
  • Tsunami: if you are near the coast and told to evacuate, go inland or to higher ground.
