Shorebreak and spinal injuries

SafetyStatewideChecked Oct. 29, 2026

Waves that break directly onto the shore cause many of Hawaiʻi's neck and back injuries, often in small surf. The average wave height when a spinal cord injury happens is about 3 feet.

  • Small-looking waves can still be dangerous when they break in shallow water.
  • Ask a lifeguard before entering the water at an unfamiliar beach.
  • Keep facing the ocean while standing in or near the water.
