Choose a lifeguard-protected beach

SafetyStatewideChecked Oct. 29, 2026

Hawaiʻi's ocean safety agencies advise swimming only at lifeguard-protected beaches and talking to the lifeguards before going in. Conditions change by season: a beach that is calm in summer can be dangerous in winter.

  • Strong currents and rip currents can pull swimmers away from shore; learn how to recognize them and what to do if caught.
  • Pick a beach that matches your swimming ability, and consider currents, shorebreak and the season.
  • Each county publishes lifeguarded beaches with daily schedules and current conditions.
