Caught in a rip current: what to do

SafetyStatewideChecked Oct. 29, 2026

A rip current pulls you away from shore, not under. Stay calm and float, swim parallel to the shore to get out of it, and wave your arms for a lifeguard. Never swim in after someone yourself.

  • Float and stay calm. Fighting the current wears you out.
  • Swim parallel to the shore, then angle back in with the waves.
  • Wave your arms and call out so a lifeguard or people on the beach can see you.
  • Helping someone else: alert a lifeguard, throw them something that floats and call 911. Do not go in after them; many rip current deaths are would-be rescuers.
  • Best protection: swim at a beach with a lifeguard and ask about currents before going in.
