Haʻikū Stairs (Stairway to Heaven) is illegal and being removed

Rules & lawsOʻahuChecked Oct. 30, 2026

Climbing Oʻahu's Haʻikū Stairs has been illegal since 1987. The city voted in 2021 to remove them and began removal in 2024. Police cite and arrest trespassers. Choose a legal trail instead.

  • The area is a closed, dangerous construction and natural area; officials cite safety, trespassing, neighborhood impacts and city liability.
  • In April 2024 alone, police issued dozens of citations and several arrests for trespassing at the stairs.
  • Legal alternatives with big views: Lanikai Pillbox, Makapuʻu Lighthouse, Koko Crater Stairs or Diamond Head.
