Statewide sunscreen law: no oxybenzone or octinoxate

Rules & lawsStatewideChecked Oct. 29, 2026

Hawaiʻi state law prohibits sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals linked to coral reef damage. Some counties go further and require mineral-only sunscreen.

  • Check the label: avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate anywhere in Hawaiʻi.
  • Maui County and Hawaiʻi County have stricter mineral-only rules (see their entries).
  • Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
