Hurricane season prep for new residents
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Because nearly everything arrives by ship, Hawaiʻi emergency officials ask households to keep at least 14 days of food and water, plus medicine and supplies, and to sign up for county alerts.
- Season: June 1 to November 30.
- Kit: at least 14 days of water (about a gallon per person per day) and food, medications, a battery or crank radio, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, cash, and pet supplies.
- Alerts: sign up for your county's alerts (HNL.INFO on Oʻahu; Maui, Hawaiʻi and Kauaʻi counties run their own).
- Know if you're in a tsunami evacuation zone (check your county's maps) and where your nearest shelter is.
- Before a storm: fill gas tanks, secure lanai furniture, charge phones and power banks.
- Renters: get renter's insurance; standard policies may exclude hurricane or flood damage, so ask.
