Sleeping Giant (Nounou) Trail
Kauaʻi's popular East Side hike up Nounou mountain above Kapaʻa. It's about 3.5 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of gain. All three routes were still closed after Hurricane Lowell as of Oct. 29, 2026, so check DLNR before you go.
- Status: all three routes (East, West and Kuamoʻo) remain closed after Hurricane Lowell, as of Oct. 29, 2026.
- When open: the East trail from Haleilio Road in Wailua is the usual route, about 3.5 miles round trip and about 1,000 feet of gain, with ocean and mountain views at the top.
- Stay off the final rocky 'chin' scramble if it's wet or windy; falls happen here.
- Check the Nā Ala Hele and DLNR State Parks notices for reopening news.
