Two Step (Hōnaunau Bay) snorkeling
One of Hawaiʻi Island's best snorkel spots: a lava-shelf entry at the Hōnaunau Bay boat ramp, next to Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, about 40 minutes south of Kailua-Kona. You may not snorkel from the park's Keoneʻele Cove, and parking is tight, so arrive early.
- Entry: the natural lava 'two steps' at the Hōnaunau Bay boat ramp, which Hawaiʻi County manages. It's just outside the national park.
- Snorkelers may not enter the water at Keoneʻele Cove inside Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau.
- Parking: the park lot is small and fills by midday. The park asks snorkelers to park outside the gate on the one-way public road. Paid private lots nearby are also common.
- Don't use the park's restrooms to change or rinse off.
- Safety: check surf first, snorkel with a buddy, and watch for boats, since it's a working boat ramp. There are no lifeguards. Don't touch or stand on coral.
- Combine it with a walk through Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, the restored place of refuge (park entrance fee applies).
