Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area

Places & parksHawaiʻi IslandChecked Oct. 29, 2026

One of Hawaiʻi Island's widest white-sand beaches, on the Kohala Coast about 30 minutes north of the Kona airport. It has lifeguards, but rip currents and shorebreak get dangerous when surf is up. Non-residents pay an entry fee plus parking; Hawaiʻi residents get in free.

  • Hours: 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; the gates close at 8 p.m.
  • Fees for non-residents: $5 per person (credit card only) plus $10 per vehicle for parking. Hawaiʻi residents with ID are free.
  • Lifeguards are on duty. In winter and whenever surf is high, watch for strong shorebreak and rip currents; ask the lifeguard before you swim.
  • Facilities include restrooms, showers and picnic pavilions. The A-frame cabins are closed.
  • The Ala Kahakai coastal trail links Hāpuna to Kaunaʻoa (Mauna Kea Beach) to the north.
  • Shade is limited, so bring an umbrella and reef-safe sunscreen.
