Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach

Places & parksHawaiʻi IslandChecked Oct. 29, 2026

Hawaiʻi Island's best-known black-sand beach, in Kaʻū between Volcano and South Point. Green sea turtles often rest on the sand: stay at least 10 feet away. Lifeguards are on duty during the day, and you shouldn't take any black sand home.

  • Getting there: off Highway 11 in Kaʻū; turn makai (toward the ocean) on Alanui Road between mile markers 56 and 57. It's about 45 minutes from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
  • Lifeguards are posted from about 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Honu (green sea turtles) bask here; keep at least 10 feet away and don't touch or feed them.
  • The small cove is the calmest swimming spot. Lava rock and cold freshwater springs are common, so wear water shoes.
  • Taking black sand is prohibited and harms the beach.
  • Restrooms, showers and picnic pavilions are available; the lot is free.
