Richardson Ocean Park (Hilo snorkeling and swimming)

Places & parksHawaiʻi IslandChecked Oct. 29, 2026

The Hilo side's most reliable snorkel and swim spot: a black-sand cove sheltered by a lava breakwater, about four miles east of downtown on Kalanianaʻole Avenue. It's free and has lifeguards, and honu often rest on the sand.

  • Free entry and a free paved lot; open about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (county posted hours).
  • Lifeguards are on duty during posted hours.
  • Snorkeling: beginner-friendly inside the breakwater. Stay in the marked zone, since the current picks up near the open end.
  • The water is cooler and visibility more moderate than on the Kona side, because of freshwater flowing in.
  • Honu often rest here; stay at least 10 feet away on land or in the water.
  • Restrooms, showers and picnic tables are available. Skip it during big winter swells or flood warnings, which are common in Hilo.
