Surf lessons in Waikīkī
Waikīkī's gentle, rolling waves are the classic place to learn to surf. Beach schools set up right on the sand by the big hotels and offer group, semi-private and private lessons. Everyone must be able to swim, and kids often need private lessons.
- Where: lessons start on Waikīkī Beach near the Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Waikiki and Outrigger Waikiki/Duke's, and at the Diamond Head end of the beach.
- Formats: group (4 to 5 per instructor), semi-private (2 to 3) and private (1 on 1).
- Age rules vary: some schools require private lessons for kids under 12; some group lessons are 13 and up.
- All students must be able to swim without help.
- Ask what's included: board, leash, rash guard, reef shoes, locker, photos.
- On the North Shore, lessons are given in Haleʻiwa when the surf is small (usually summer).
- Prices are approximate as listed in 2026 and change often; confirm and book directly with the operator.
