Lodging tax (TAT) rose to 11% in 2026: the "green fee"
Starting January 1, 2026, Hawaiʻi's state Transient Accommodations Tax rose 0.75 percentage points to 11% under Act 96, the "green fee." It applies to overnight stays at hotels and vacation rentals, including by Hawaiʻi residents, and now to cruise ship passengers.
- Gov. Josh Green described the cost as about $3 extra for every $400 spent on lodging.
- The added revenue, about $100 million a year, is split among natural resource protection, climate and disaster resilience, and visitor experience.
- Each county adds its own 3% lodging tax, for a combined 14% TAT. With general excise tax passed on (up to 4.712%), total lodging taxes can reach about 18.7% of the room rate.
