Shopping tips: tax, kamaʻāina discounts and Hawaiian-made gifts

Shopping centersStatewideChecked Oct. 29, 2026

Prices in Hawaiʻi don't include tax: the general excise tax is added at the register, usually 4.712% on every island. Many stores give kamaʻāina (resident) and military discounts with ID. For real Hawaiian-made gifts, look for local makers at farmers markets and the Made in Hawaiʻi Festival.

  • Tax: the general excise tax is 4.5% in all four counties, and businesses may pass on up to 4.712%, which is why receipts often show that number.
  • Kamaʻāina and military discounts: ask; ID required.
  • Hawaiian-made: look for local makers' labels, farmers markets (KCC, Hilo), craft fairs and the Made in Hawaiʻi Festival each August.
  • Going home: fresh fruit, plants and flowers must pass airport agriculture inspection; pineapple and most lei are fine.
  • Taking sand, rocks or coral from beaches is restricted by state law.
  • Parking validation: most malls validate with a purchase; keep your ticket.
