Where to stay on Oʻahu: areas compared
Most Oʻahu hotels are in Waikīkī, about 25 to 30 minutes from the airport. Ko Olina on the West Side is resort-quiet and close to the airport; Kāhala, by Diamond Head, is calm but near town; the North Shore (Turtle Bay, Lāʻie) is about an hour out. Kailua has beaches but almost no hotels.
- Waikīkī: the most choice at every price, walkable beaches, restaurants and shopping. Parking is expensive, so many visitors skip the rental car. Budget-friendly picks include Wayfinder Waikiki (from about $166 a night).
- Kāhala and Diamond Head: quieter, upscale, about 10 minutes past Waikīkī. The Kahala Hotel & Resort is the main hotel.
- Ko Olina (West Side): resort lagoons, the Four Seasons and Aulani, about 25 minutes west of the airport. You'll want a car.
- North Shore and Lāʻie: The Ritz-Carlton Oʻahu, Turtle Bay is the big resort; Courtyard by Marriott Oʻahu North Shore in Lāʻie is the practical choice near the Polynesian Cultural Center. About an hour from the airport.
- Kailua and Lanikai: famous beaches but no resort hotels. Most stays are licensed vacation rentals; Honolulu limits short-term rentals (generally 90 days or more outside resort areas), so book only legal, permitted rentals.
- Ala Moana and the marina: The Modern Honolulu (from about $185 a night) and the Prince Waikīkī sit between Waikīkī and Ala Moana Center.
