The Eddie (Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, Waimea Bay)
The most famous big-wave contest in the world, held at Waimea Bay only when waves are big enough: consistent 20-foot-plus Hawaiian-scale surf (about 40-foot faces) for a full day. The waiting period runs from early December to early March, and it has run only 11 times.
- Waiting period: roughly early December to early March each winter.
- It only runs on a day with consistent 20 to 25 foot Hawaiian-scale surf (about 40 to 50 foot faces) all day.
- It has run 11 times in 49 years as of the 2025-26 season; it did not run in 2025-26.
- When it's called, huge crowds head to Waimea and traffic on Kamehameha Highway backs up for miles. Go very early or take the bus.
- It honors Eddie Aikau, Waimea Bay's first lifeguard, who was lost at sea in 1978 while seeking help for the Hōkūleʻa crew.
